IIT Gandhinagar Campus

IIT Gandhinagar is a public technical university. It is located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. This campus is known to be the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. IIT Gandhinagar, was established in 2008. The IIT Gandhinagar campus is spread over an area of 400 acres of land. This is along the river Sabarmati. It is also one of the eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) that has been announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

This was declared in 2008. In the beginning, this institute, that is IIT Gandhinagar began operating in a temporary campus. This was in Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda. This college was mentored by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Afterwards, the first batch of students was admitted to chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.

Foundation of IIT Gandhinagar

IITGN was included in the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. This act was passed in the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2011. It was later passed by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012. The IIT Gandhinagar campus is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Palaj village. In 2011, during his inaugural speech at the Amalthea technology summit, the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi discussed the land for the new permanent campus. His speech had stated that, “the state government has decided to give land on a 99-year lease for a token amount of just one rupee for establishing a campus.”

Soon, the institute acquired over 400 acres of land in August 2012, and classes and other activities commenced on the new campus in July 2015. The 400-acre campus of IITGN is situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Palaj village. The campus is divided into three main areas: the Academic Block, the Housing Block, and the Student Hostels. This campus is India’s first 5-star GRIHA LEED campus, designed to minimize its negative impact on the environment. IITGN has also been awarded FSSAI’s ‘Eat Right Campus’ with a 5-star rating, making it the first (and only) academic campus to receive such recognition.
